Plastic pollution: Alarming threat to Life - sciencenerds

Hey, friends, I'm sure you guys must be wondering what is such a big deal about it well you won't believe but plastic pollution has become one of the most urgent environmental issues As the world is getting engulfed in plastic waste

So in today's article let us address this critical problem and learn what is plastic pollution and its causes or effects on us and what we can do to deal with it.

Zoom in, so what is plastic pollution?
plastic pollution is nothing but the deposition of plastic material and particles like plastic bags, bottles and microbeads within the Earth's environment that adversely affects life on the planet.

I know what you guys are thinking but how does it affect the lives of humans and all! well imagine a sea turtle swims through the water in search of food and finds a white blob floating near the surface yummy anything's a jellyfish and eats the item but little innocent turtle know that the floating blob isn't a jellyfish but is a plastic bag that could make it and many other crotch cannibals very sick.

yes, my friends just like that, millions of animals are killed by plastic every year from birds to fish to other aquatic organisms not only that plastic has been found in the stomach of many land-based animals including elephants, zebras, Tigers, camels, cattle and other large mammals in some cases causing death and all these factors somehow impact human lives.

scientists have found microplastics in marine species and almost of these end up on our plates, also they've been found in a maturity of the world's tapped water but the critical question is who is responsible for all this plastic mess around us well, unfortunately, it's none other than humans themselves.

We all make use of things made from plastic as well as things that come to us in plastic, there are many sorts of plastic and they are all light in weight low in cost and can be used in all weathers and they last long really long.

The funny thing is that we don't usually end up using plastic for a very long time, we throw away plastic bags, plastic cups, straws and bottles, chips and chocolate wrappers, spoons, plates etc. and we throw them almost soon after using them.

Plastic is formed of certain chemicals that don't decompose easily, plastic takes a very while to travel away and there in time it does tons of injury, the trash we throw away if done properly is collected from various places and is shipped to a dump yard.

At the dump yard, it's disposed of as best as possible the plastic things are collected then cut into tiny pieces which are then melted and made into new shapes.

In certain countries plastic is reused to form furniture clothes and other useful things but tons of trash falls out of the rubbish bins or is thrown away casually carelessly anywhere.

what happens to that plastic?
well, it goes into our drains, our ponds, our lakes and rivers and a method or the opposite finishes up in our oceans, altogether the oceans everywhere within the world, there's tons of plastic floating on the surface and sunken like treasures within the deepest parts due to the waves and therefore the Sun.

Plastic things within the ocean break down into smaller pieces of plastic.

The oceans are the home of many types of fish, animals and even birds they are not used to seeing brightly coloured and slow-moving things in the ocean they think it's food and swallow these small pieces of plastic.
Many birds roam around for food, they returned with plastic and feed them to their little babies, their stomachs get filled they think they are full and don't eat the food that they actually need and because they haven't got the nutrition they need, they die and when their stomachs are opened it isn't a pretty sight there are many ocean creatures that have died because of eating plastic if you go to the beach you will get the idea of the plastic that is out there in the oceans, some of the plastic, what is in the ocean comes back to the beach when the tide is low and if we don't pick it up and properly get rid of it goes back into the water and causes more harm to the poor little birds, the fish, and the turtles.

The oceans and the seas are home to some of nature's most special creatures there are already more pieces of plastic in the oceans than there are fish, we must do something about the plastic that is out there, we must commit to use and throw away lesser plastic, let's do some contribution in creating a nicer environment for the animals in the ocean for nature mother Earth.

Australia Fires - ScienceNerds

Australia is not a stranger to wildfires, every year during summer the bushfires are seen in the New South Wales and Victoria (South-east Australia )

A bushfire, which started on 11th Oct, approximately 120 km south-east to Broome, burned off the field of around 22,00,000 acres. This time the fires were predicted to last for few months thanks to extremely dry weather and heat.

Some serious bushfires within the history of Australia :

  • The 1851 Black Thursday bushfires
  • Ash Wednesday the bushfires of Australia were a series of fires that went through south-eastern Australia on 16 February 1983.
  • Bushfires in Australia affects massive areas and cause property damage and caused deaths of 800 people and many Animals in Australia since 1851.

Causes

Bushfires can be triggered by natural events such as lightning, but more frequently by human activities such as arching from powerlines, campfire, accidental ignition in the course of agricultural clearing, sparks from machinery, cigarettes.

Why do bushfires 2019-20 causing so much damage?

every year there is a season of the fireplace during summer in Australian summer, with hot, dry weather making it easy for blazes to start out and spread. Natural causes are responsible most of the time, like lightning strikes in drought-affected forests.

The hot, dry and windy weather has precipitated an early and grisly start to the present year's fire season. thanks to the long-term drought in southern Western Australia, the Australian Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC anticipated an eventful fire season for 2019-2020. Smoke from the fires has blown half-way round the world.

Bushfires are every day include in Australia's schedule often triggered by natural causes like lightning strikes & can't be blamed on global weather change or increasing greenhouse emission emissions alone.

The flames are exacerbated by 40C temperatures and amazing breezes, making troublesome conditions for a great many firemen sent inside the field.

Short rainfalls since 2017 :

As indicated by the Bureau of Meteorology, 80% of the field gets however 600 mm of precipitation yearly and a half has even yet 300mm. As an entire, Australia features a very low annual average rainfall of 419 mm.

Water Crisis in India - ScienceNerds

Water Crisis in India
water shortage in India is anticipated to get worse because the overall population increment anticipated to reach out to 1.6 billion continuously in 2050.

Sanitation around water sources
Sanitation around water sources

  • India is estimated to run out of physical water for every day utilization, very quick at least 21 urban communities in India, significant urban communities like capital New Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru by 2020, affecting about 100 million people.

    • Reasons behind water scarcity in India.
    • The water shortage is normally man-made in light of abundance increment and botch of water assets.

    • water shortage in India is anticipated to get worse because the total population is predicted to increment to 1.6 billion before the finish of 2050.

There is a unique press on the water by Modi government 2.0 which was guaranteed during Lok Sabha crusading. Modi Government made a breakthrough by launching a replacement ministry named Jal Shakti, which he recently mentioned as a logo of his commitment towards resolving the country’s water crisis. The River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation are Ministries recognized, national organization administration of rules and regulations for usage of the water resources in India.

According to a study conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Highly vulnerable areas are Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Haryana, and Delhi. Least areas vulnerable are the Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, North Eastern States, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Kerala and Jharkhand Moderately vulnerable states are Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The Western Ghats are under rock bottom vulnerability and therefore the to windward of the ghats are less vulnerable. The scarcity regions In India, the foremost severe cases include Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, Punjab, and a few parts of Karnataka, Maharastra, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.

Global warming - A Rising Alert - ScienceNerds

Global warming is the long-term rise within the average temperature of the Earth's climate. it's the most important aspect of current global climate change and has been demonstrated by direct temperature measurements and by measurements of varied effects of warming.

    • What is global warming and the greenhouse effect?

The process of the rise in total temperature of a planet's atmosphere by radiations of a planet's atmosphere heats up the planet surface at a temperature above the normal temperature of the atmosphere. Radiatively active gases (i.e., greenhouse gases)

In an exceedingly planet's atmosphere radiates energy altogether directions.

    • What causes global warming in simple words?

Effects of  increasing global warming on sea levels

The phrase "global warming" was coined by Wallace Smith Broecker. Recent global climate change would still cause a 6 meters (20 ft) sea-level rise whether or not greenhouse emission emissions were reduced in 2015 per a scientific paper in Science.
The term commonly refers to a mainly human-caused increase in global surface temperatures and its projected continuation. during this context,

the terms heating and global climate change are often used interchangeably,

but global climate change includes both heating and its effects, like changes in precipitation and impacts that differ by region. there have been prehistoric periods of world warming, but observed changes since the mid-20th century are much greater than those seen in previous records covering decades to thousands of years.
     EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING

    • Extreme weather events :
Extreme events like heatwaves, droughts, tornadoes, and hurricanes have affected the Most a part of the planet.

    • Ice melt: Ice melt, maybe a blend of the binary compound, magnesium chloride pellets, and salt pellets. It melts to -15°F. Ice melt is usually present within the sort of flakes, like Industrial Blue Ice Melt. it is a fast-acting blended ice melt with salt flakes for fast melting power.

    • Ocean levels and sea fermentation: can contrarily influence marine life, causing life forms' shells and skeletons made up of carbonate to break up. Animals that produce carbonate structures need to spend extra energy either repairing their damaged shells or thickening them to survive.

Plants and animals: More than 700 mammals and birds currently threatened with extinction already appear to possess been adversely plagued by temperature change, in step with a serious review of scientific studies. At the same time, high temperatures, a decrease in water availability and changes to soil conditions making it harder for plants to sustain. Overall, the temperature change is anticipated to stunt plant growth.

    • Social effects: Global warming is projected to possess a variety of effects on the oceans. effects include increasing sea levels thanking thermal expansion and melting of glaciers and ice sheets, and warming of the ocean surface, resulting in increased temperature stratification.

    Depletion of Ozone :

There are a number of pollutant gasses in the stratosphere-nitric oxide (NO), nitrous oxide(N2O),
Chlorine (Cl) and Chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs like chlorofluoromethane or freon) that can react with ozone to produce Oxygen, the net result is that the ozone gets depleted in the stratosphere of the Atmosphere.

    CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING :
    1. Travel & Transportation: People use private vehicles, the number of vehicles is increasing drastically which results in more emission of greenhouse causing gasses like Carbon monoxide(CO) and Methane(CH4).
    2. Industrialization: Massive amount of Carbon dioxide releases from the sources of Fossil-fuel burning during mining of coal, oil refining.Blast furnace refining of iron ore and other base metals.
    3. Deforestation: It causes a reduction in CO2 consumption by trees, which results in over deposition of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
    4. Power plants: Carbon dioxide emissions stem from electricity production. Ninety-three per cent of the electric industry emissions result from burning coal. According to the EPA coal-fired power plants.
    5. CFCs: Refrigerants, solvents, Aerosol propellants and foam packaging.
